"Does This Glorify The Lord Jesus Christ, Or Not?"
"Does This Glorify The Lord Jesus Christ, Or Not?"
The question (above, in the Title), is the only query that matters in life. No other ultimate question has any relevance or importance. All that matters is, "Will what I do/think/believe/act on/cogitate glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, or will it not?"
The reason we say, "The Lord Jesus Christ," is because to simply say, "God," is not good enough. There are too many false conceptions of "God," to make this word useful (in this respect and regard). . . . If the question was, "Will this action/etc. glorify me or someone else or something else or some false god?"--then, obviously, this is the wrong question to ask. Still, it is better to *face* the fact of actually making this inquiry--than to pretend it is not done. (An "honest" idolater is better than a "dishonest" one.)
What are some of the principal ways the Lord Jesus Christ gets glorified by us? Here is a succinct list, in somewhat [not total] conceptual/logical order. . . . Is Jesus our First Love? Do we love God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit through our faith in and love for the God/Man (Jesus Christ)? Do we treasure the Holy Spirit--given to us by The Father and The Son? Does our love for Jesus manifest itself in all gracious and holy affections, for the Triune God, His church, and the people in God's world? Are we covenantally joined to Christ in His church--via baptism, vows, and faithful communion? Do we love to believe, hear, relish, and propagate Jesus' gospel message? Do we love the Written Word of God--seeing Jesus in every line of it? Do we love the church people who love Christ/are they the "excellent ones, in whom is all [our] delight" (Ps. 16:3b/ESV)? Do we look forward to and enjoy the Sabbath Worship Services of Christ's holy church on The Lord's Days? Do we ruminate on God's love to us through Christ in the balance of those Sundays?
There are subordinate questions that we might ask, that are also relevant to THE great inquiry: "Does this glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, or not?" They might be these: "Would this person be a good spouse for me; one who would love Christ alongside me?" "Would this job/move enhance my church life, so that I would/could cultivate my love for God through Christ consistently and well?" "Does my use of time focus on Jesus Christ; and is it pleasing to Him?" "Are all my legal and permissible worldly enjoyments seen as 'love tokens' of my Father's affection to me in Jesus?"
Do we have decisions to make today? Of course, we do. Let all the regenerate saints of the true church ask THE Key Question: "Does this Glorify The Lord Jesus Christ, or not?"
