Theology: The Queen of The Sciences

Theology: The Queen of The Sciences

Probably throughout most of New Covenant Church Age history, at least in all Christianized lands, Theology has been considered, "The Queen of The Sciences."  The very word "science" has been a bit hijacked in recent western history, so that it is thought (wrongly) by many people, that "science" means what is (properly-termed) empirical science.  The word "science" is simply the Latin, for "knowledge."  So, historically, "science" applied to the following general (and important) categories: 1) the Being and nature of God, (the Triune God); 2) the creation, redemption, and providence of God with regard to His creatures; and 3) the nature of created beings and matter (themselves).  The study of this latter category is what is often today considered "science"--but, in fact, actual science is much bigger and broader than that; (not that the study of the creation is not a worthy endeavor).

We might subsume Philosophy under Theology; but, it is the case that Philosophy is logically prior to any other scientific discipline, since all of it [scientific endeavor] has to start with the God-given ability to think.  (Still, God, "Theology Proper," is ontologically prior to all creation.)  Therefore, even though Christian Theology governs Philosophy, we do not deny that, (from our point of view, not God's), all our intellectual conception starts with Epistemology (a subset of Philosophy).  (But even this has been given to us, by God.)

So, why is Theology the Queen of All the Sciences?  Because nothing can be properly understood or appreciated that is not connected to the God who created it.  "Science" without conscious reference to God is little more than random notes and babblings, that have no obvious (and greater) purpose.

The truth of Christian/Biblical/Reformed Theology is buttressed by sanctified Metaphysics--but its crowning glorious validity is via regenerative Spirit-filled and -led faith--ultimately in The God/Man Son of God Himself, Jesus Christ our Lord--whose historical validation is beyond any dispute.

True Theology is, by far and away, the "surest" of all the sciences.  It is founded on The Person and Word of God Himself (Itself): Christ and The Sacred Scriptures that all speak of Him.  All the other legitimate sciences, viz. those touching on God's creation and providence, are also (only) "sure" as they are giving glory to the God who created/sustained their subject matter(s).  "Empirical science"--though it is (ironically) the least "certain" of all the sciences, since it is the farthest "removed" from its Creator--can also, in The Creator, be relied upon--though with the caveat that empirical objects can never be totally "known" with regard to their essence, by us.  (See Treatise #25* for a discussion of this interesting issue.)

Theology, "The Queen of The Sciences," has not always, in the overall history of the church, sat as a "beautiful" or "elegant" Queen.  Prior to the Protestant Reformation, for example, she had grown to appear quite "haggard."  Still, God's "Queen" will always be the handmaid of His Son Jesus Christ; and, simply because her subject matter is the Triune Personages of the Godhead, she will maintain her station, as, "The Queen of The Sciences."

Let all of us bow to God's enthroned King, our Lord Jesus Christ; and, as we do this in humble regenerative faith, we will enjoy all of God's Being, and His Creation--in ways that glorify Him.

"He [Christ] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible . . . all things were created through him and for him," (Col. 1:15-16/ESV).
